Rutgers basketball welcomes son of NBA legend for a visit

Rutgers will host the son of an NBA king next month.

Kiyan Anthony, a four-star shooting guard in the 2025 recruiting class, will take an official visit to Piscataway the weekend of Oct. 4, On3’s Joe Tipton reported Wednesday.

The Scarlet Knights are one of six schools Anthony is considering, according to the list he provided in July. They join Syracuse, Auburn, USC, Ohio State and Florida State.

Rutgers made an offer to Anthony, the 31st-ranked player in the 2025 class according to the 247Sports Composite, in July.

“They’ve been on my tail,” he told Tipton. “They’ve shown the most love of all the schools. Rutgers is right next to my house, so I want to drive down there someday, take some pictures, and check out their campus. But yeah, they’ve been on my tail a lot, and I appreciate that.”

Anthony recently told ZagsBlog that he wants to commit before his senior season starts this winter.

“October or November,” he said.

Anthony is the son of Carmelo Anthony, the former Knicks star who retired with the ninth-most points in NBA history. Anthony is a 10-time NBA All-Star and played in the NBA for 19 years, most recently with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2021-22 season.

The No. 3 pick in the 2003 draft, Anthony was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2003 Final Five after leading Syracuse to the national championship in his lone college season. Internationally, he helped USA Basketball win three Olympic golds — in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

But when he announced his retirement from the sport in 2023, he said his son Kiyan would be his legacy.

“People ask me what I think my legacy is. It’s not my accomplishments on the court that come to mind, all the awards or accolades,” Anthony said. “Because my story has always been more than basketball. My legacy, my son … I will live on forever through you. The time has come for you to carry this torch.”
