Class 7 student among 3 electrocuted in Tamil Nadu: Police

Chennai:

In a tragic incident, three people, including a class 7 student, died from electric shocks when they accidentally stepped on an illegal electric fence that had been erected to prevent wild boars from entering the farmland.

The incident took place on Sunday in Perumpattu village at the foothills of Yelagiri hills, near Jolarpet town in Tirupathur district of Tamil Nadu.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as K. Singaram (45), an Ayurveda practitioner, his son S. Lokesh (15) and S. Karipriyan (65), a farm labourer from Singaram.

A country-made weapon, explosives, flares and nets were also found at the scene.

Singaram and his son Lokesh hail from Mookkannoor village, near Jolarpettai town, while Karipriyan is from Perumapattu village in the Yelagiri Hills.

After preliminary investigation, police have revealed that Singaram, his son Lokesh and Karipriyan went into the hill forests early on Sunday morning to hunt small wild animals like rabbits and deer.

They were on their way from the forest reserve to the agricultural area in Perumapattu village when they accidentally stepped on the illegal electric fence.

Police also found that the agricultural land where the incident took place belongs to K. Murugan. He signed a lease agreement and gave the agricultural land to another farmer, S. Nidhi.

According to police, Nidhi has been growing grains on the three-acre plot of land for over a year.

It should be noted that the village is located at the foot of the reserve forest. The farmer has therefore illegally placed an electric fence around the plot to prevent wild animals from destroying the crop.

Karusalipettu police reached the spot after being alerted by the village head. The bodies were taken to the Government Taluk Hospital in Tirupattur town for autopsy.

The police have registered a case and an investigation is underway.
