Golovkin becomes head of the Olympic Commission » September 26, 2024

Two-time world middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin has been appointed chairman of a new Olympic Committee by World Boxing, the international federation set up to ensure boxing remains part of the Olympic Movement.

Golovkin, 42, who is also the current president of the Kazakhstan National Olympic Committee and 2004 Olympic silver medalist, will work closely with World Boxing leadership to manage and provide oversight of the organization’s relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). to ensure that boxing is reinstated in the sports program for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

Other Commission members will be added in the coming weeks. To date, 44 national committees have joined the World Boxing group.

Boxing is not currently scheduled for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, but the IOC is open to boxing’s reinstatement if a new governing body replaces the IBA, which was excluded from the past two Olympics.
