Preamble

“They are the best team in the world,” said Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor. He was of course referring to tonight’s opposition, the winners of the Champions League this year and also last year, those who trump a treble with a quadruple, the fate with Putellas, Bonmatí, Walsh and more: Barcelona.

Yes, the all-conquering team will be at the Joie Stadium and will meet City in the first round of the Women’s Champions League group stage matches this season. It’s a Herculean task, but the hosts can take some inspiration from Chelsea, who managed to secure a semi-final first leg victory against Barcelona last season (feel free to ignore the second). This is not an impossible task.

City started this as WSL toppers and secured victory against West Ham this weekend, while Khadija Shaw and Vivianne Miedema were left on the bench. Barcelona has achieved five wins out of five in the league, after scoring, er, 18 goals in their last two games. This should be interesting. Kick-off is at 8pm BST.
