Not everyone here is an enthusiastic Harris supporter. Far from it.

I just spoke with Ivonne Torres Miranda, an older woman who lives in Fairhill.

She has voted Democratic since the early 1990s, but is not sure if she will vote this year. She says she feels both parties have neglected her community.

“Look here, it’s a mess,” she says in rapid-fire Spanish with a thick Puerto Rican accent. “Crime, drugs, we have it all here.”

“Go walk a few blocks and see if you don’t get robbed,” she tells me, pointing toward the adjacent crime-ridden area of ​​Kensington. “People work here, and they work so hard, but they still cut coupons.”

However, last night’s comments left her furious. When asked about it, she started shouting, which attracted a small crowd of curious onlookers.

“You just don’t say something like that! I don’t believe for a second that they would hold a meeting without knowing what the speaker would say,” she adds. “Even if he was joking, don’t joke like that!”

“That campaign hurt itself so much. I think it’s insane,” she exclaimed. “We are Puerto Ricans. We have dignity and pride. You have to think before you say things.”
