Alexander Matias, Tonia Lediju and Helen-Marie Gordon were the early leaders as results trickled out Tuesday night in the race for three open seats on the Vallejo City Council.

District 1 candidate Alexander Matias was joined by family and colleagues at El Barbas Restaurant and Bar on Tuesday evening to await the results. Despite his early lead, Matias felt the pressure.

“There is definitely fear,” said Matias, who managed Brenda Pletchy and Carl Bonner in the early returns. “But just considering the amount of work we put into the campaign and the amount of work we did for the community, I feel really good.

“We knocked on doors, we did the work for the city, and I hope the results tonight and in the days to come reflect that.”

First candidate Bonner braced himself for every possible outcome.

“Vallejo has a lot of sub-problems that are all happening at the same time,” Bonner says. “I would like the winner to stay the course.”

Plechaty remained optimistic behind Bonner and Matias in third place.

“Until the numbers are final, I’m still hopeful,” she said. “I feel like I’ve done absolutely everything I can, so I feel like it’s up to the people of Vallejo to decide who they want.”

In the District 6 race, Arriola was calm. So calm, in fact, that she spent the evening “watching a movie and switching between Fox News.”

The race, Arriola said, was “a lot closer than I thought.”

As Gordon drove forward, she said she was “hanging on.”

“I believe people want to see something different than what has happened over the last four years,” Gordon said. “I think people want to see change.”

Meanwhile, unopposed District 3 candidate Tonia Lediju is sitting pretty. She was excitedly joined by friends and family at the Blue Rock Springs Golf Course to commemorate the end of her victory.
