Michigan State Football promises to draw interest from suitors

Michigan State Football promises to draw interest from suitors

The double-edged sword of recruiting good players is that other schools will try to acquire them as signing day approaches.

That’s the case with Michigan State and several members of its 2025 class. Running back Jace Clarizio was tendered by Alabama this week and plans to visit the Crimson Tide. But while many believe Clarizio’s hometown team will remain with the Spartans despite that visit, there is more competition for cornerback Aydan West.

West (6-0, 184 pounds) is having a fantastic season at Gaithersburg (Maryland) Quince Orchard with one-handed interceptions on the highlight reel as well as big plays on offense. This has drawn new schools his way that have challenged the Spartan pledge he made in late June.

“He was a bit of a late bloomer in today’s market in terms of the way recruiting is going,” said 247Sports analyst Brian Dohn. “I watched him practice last fall and loved his size and his ability to get open and run. He has a good feel for the game. He plays on one of the best public school teams in Maryland, so he gets good reputations in practice. He’s been training with (South Carolina receiver) Nyck Harbor to get faster. I think he hit 22 miles per hour on the field this year. I think if schools waited longer he would be better known. He was good as a junior, but as a senior he really developed.”

North Carolina offered West and other schools are reaching out in hopes of persuading him to attend or change his mind.

The relationships he has built with the Spartans will help their efforts to keep West in the fold.

“Yes, they can keep him because he really likes the staff,” Dohn said. “He likes the fit in the defense and has a good relationship with Joe Rossi, the defensive coordinator. He has a good relationship with the defensive back coaches, but because of where he plays and the talent he has shown, other candidates have started looking at him, so it’s not a slam dunk because other people want him.”

West is currently ranked the No. 107 corner in the class of 2025 and the No. 38 senior in Maryland, but Dohn said he has a chance to move up in the postseason rankings update.

Quince Orchard finished the regular season 9-0 and begins the playoffs this week.

Spartans offer young Jersey prospects

The Spartan staff is on the road during their bye week and is offering new deals. Wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins offered Oradell (New Jersey) Bergen Catholic sophomore wide receiver Bryan Porter.

Porter is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect who also runs track. Michigan, Oklahoma, Boston College, Syracuse and Marshall also offered.

Hawkins also offered Irvington (New Jersey) Don Bosco Prep freshman cornerback Phoenix Evanswho has played on the varsity for one of Jersey’s top teams. Penn State, Pitt and others have offered.
