2024 New York State Cross Country Championships

Monroe-Woodbury captured the New York State Class A boys cross country championship on Saturday and Mount Academy captured the Class D girls title with a stellar performance in Queensbury on Saturday. Tri-Valley senior siblings Van Furman and Anna Furman won their respective Class D races. The Cornish girls came second in Class B.

The Crusader boys placed their runners at 2-3-13-15-27 in the team competition, posting 60 points and outscoring North Rockland (Section 1) by 82 points and Colonie (Section 2) by 94. Seniors Gavin Catherwood (15 : 24.2 ) and Shane Golio (15:25.0) led the way with overall Nos. 4 and 5.

The Mount Academy girls placed 5-7-9-13-18 in the team event for 52 points, ahead of Lake Placid with 60 and Beaver River with 105. Sophomore Anna Furman won the 3.1-mile race in 18:10.7, almost 30. seconds ahead of Pine Plains junior Violet Bliss (18:40.2).

Defending champion Van Furman proved dominant in the boys’ class D. He won the race in 15:17.6, nearly 36 seconds ahead of Ibrahim Ford of Arkport-Canaseraga-Almond. Pine Plains’ Maxwell Decker (16:13.7) and Daniel McPherson (16:19.3) posted a strong 5-6.

In the boys’ section, team champion Cornwall of Section 9 came fourth in Class B; Mount Academy placed fifth in Class C; and Tri-Valley placed eighth in Class D.

On the girls side, Section 9 team champion Monroe-Woodbury placed seventh in Class A; and Rondout Valley came seventh in Class C.

In the 10-person section team scoring for boys, Section 9 placed second in A; fifth in B; fifth in C; and sixth in D. In the girls sectional scoring team, Section 9 was seventh in Class A; third in class B; sixth in class C and second in class D.

Many of these same runners and teams will compete in the New York Federation Championships – which coincide with the Nike Cross Nationals New York and Northeast regional races – on Saturday, November 23 at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls. Official entries will be announced on Sunday. The Foot Locker Northeast Regional will be held in Boston on November 30.

The most recent Section 9 individual champions at the state meet include Karrie Baloga (B) of Cornwall and Adam Furman (D) of Tri-Valley in 2022; Warwick’s Behailu Bekele-Arcuri (A) in 2019; and Megan Reilly (A) of Warwick and Julia Rubin-Armstrong (C) of Onteora in 2013.

The most recent Section 9 team champions at the state meet include the Pine Plains (D) boys in 2023; Tri-Valley boys (D) in 2021-2022; Girls from Cornwall (B) in 2012 and 2018; Mount Academy boys (C) in 2017; Warwick boys in 1994-95 (B) and 2007 (AA); Goshen boys (B) in 1997; and Tri-Valley girls (C) in 1992-94.
