150,000 water bottles recalled after ‘bacteria present in the digestive tract’ was discovered

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV (WKRC) – More than 150,000 water bottles were recalled after a bacterial contamination was discovered.

According to Real Simple, the FDA issued a Class III recall affecting more than 150,000 waters bottled by Berkeley Club Beverages, Inc, a company operating out of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.

The agency reported that the bottles tested positive for coliform, which the New York State Department of Health defined as “bacteria present in the digestive tracts of animals, including humans, and found in their waste.”

A Class III classification is “a situation in which use of or exposure to a harmful product is unlikely to cause adverse health effects,” according to Real Simple, which added that coliforms can also be found in soil and plant material found.

The products affected by the recall include one- and five-gallon containers marked with a “Berkeley Springs Water Purified” label or a “Berkeley Springs Water Distilled” label.

The following codes are included in the recall:

The recalled bottles were sold in West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.

According to Real Simple, not all coliforms are dangerous, but their presence could indicate that a more harmful type, such as E. coli, is present.
