West Bengal shocked by 4 cases of sexual abuse in one day, 2 in hospitals

Amid the ongoing outrage over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the state of West Bengal has been rocked by 4 gruesome cases of sexual abuse in a single day. According to multiple reports, these cases include the assault of a nurse on duty at a government hospital in Birbhum, sexual abuse of a minor girl by hospital staff in Howrah, rape of a minor girl in Nadia and sexual abuse of a minor by a TMC Panchayat member in Madhyamgram. Interestingly, two of the four cases took place in hospitals.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee government, highlighting four consecutive gruesome cases of sexual abuse in a single day. BJP leader and social media chief Amit Malviya told X, “West Bengal is the most unsafe state for women. She is an unmitigated disaster as Chief Minister and should resign,” while listing details of the sexual abuse cases reported in a single day from the state of West Bengal.

Rauf arrested for sexually abusing minor girl in North 24 Parganas; TMC leader Abul Hafeez asks victim’s family to ‘settle matter’

Tensions erupted in Madhyamgram area of ​​North 24 Parganas after locals staged a massive protest demanding swift action against a man accused of molesting a minor girl. Locals said the accused was close to a Trinamool Congress leader, and that was why a TMC leader tried to rescue him. On Saturday midnight, locals allegedly attacked the house of Trinamool leader Abul Hafeez in Madhyamgram.

According to reports, the outrage erupted after the TMC leader asked the family of the minor victim to “settle the case”. Meanwhile, according to the BJP, the accused is a TMC panchayat member who raped a 7-year-old minor girl who was in class two.

The father of the minor victim said: “The suspect is a resident of our village. I could not imagine that he could do something like this. My daughter, who is nine years old, came from home to my shop. At that moment he abused her. I demand an exemplary punishment for him.”

According to reports, locals started protesting outside the house of the accused after they got information about the sexual assault of a minor in Rajbari area of ​​Rohanda panchayat on Saturday night. The TMC leader who is reportedly involved in the case is the husband of a local panchayat member.

According to Aaj Tak Bangla, the police have arrested a suspect named Rauf for sexually abusing a minor girl. He owns a grocery shop in Madhyamgram. In addition, the police have also arrested the husband of the local panchayat member who is accused of trying to save the suspect. The police have arrested the husband of the panchayat member and TMC leader Abul Hafeez on charges of shielding the suspect in the sexual assault case.

Following the mass outrage, police and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed to the area and tear gas was used to disperse the crowd.

Minor raped in Nadia

According to the information, a man raped a minor girl in Bhajanghat of Nadia’s Krishnaganj. After committing the heinous crime, the accused also threatened her.

The incident took place on Saturday night (August 31, 2024). It is said that the teenager was returning home after shopping when a neighbor forcibly dragged her into the garden where he raped her. He then threatened to kill the underage victim if she told anyone about it.

However, the victim returned home and told her family about her ordeal, after which her family reported the incident to the police.

Patient Abbas Uddin arrested for molesting nurse on duty at government-run hospital in Birbhum

On Saturday (August 31), police arrested a patient named Abbas Uddin for allegedly molesting a nurse on duty at a government-run hospital in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. Reports said the incident took place when the nurse was administering a saline drip to the accused, who was brought to the hospital as a patient. When he was admitted, he was put on a stretcher due to high fever.

According to the nurse’s complaint to the police, the accused patient touched her inappropriately while she was attending to him. She added that the accused not only touched her inappropriately but also used abusive language towards her.

After the incident, the hospital authorities immediately called the police and the accused patient was arrested. A formal complaint has been filed at the Ilambazar police station and an investigation is underway.

The nurse shared her ordeal and narrated the incident, “A male patient was brought in during the night shift with fever. As advised by the doctors, I was preparing to administer saline to him when he misbehaved. He touched me and used foul language. We feel unsafe here due to the lack of proper security. How can a patient behave like this?”

According to reports, Dr Masidul Hasan was on duty at the health centre on the night of the incident.

Sharing more details, Dr. Hasan said, “Around 8:30 PM, a patient named Abbas Uddin from Chotochak village arrived with fever. He immediately started misbehaving. After some clinical examinations, we advised him to give injections and intravenous fluids. When the nurse went to administer the saline solution, the patient behaved violently and molested her by touching her inappropriately. We asked the patient’s family to cooperate, but the patient continued to misbehave. We have reported the incident to the police and authorities. If no action is taken, we will consider stopping the work.”

Minor girl abused by hospital staff in Howrah

OpIndia earlier reported a similar case in a hospital in Howrah. According to reports, a lab technician named Aman Raj had molested a girl who was being treated at the hospital. After an outcry over the incident, the accused was arrested by the Howrah police. The victim was identified as a 12-year-old girl, who was admitted to the Howrah District Hospital on Wednesday (August 28) after she complained of chest pain.

The increasing reports of gruesome cases of crimes against women and minors come at a time when the state is witnessing massive protests over the gruesome rape and murder case of a female junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Since then, the Mamata Banerjee government has been witnessing massive widespread protests over the failure of law and order situation in the state and the failure of protesting doctors, women and minors.
