USMNT’s Gio Reyna injured for weeks – Nuri Şahin

Borussia Dortmund head coach Nuri Şahin has said that an “extremely sad” Giovanni Reyna will miss the team’s Bundesliga match against Heidenheim on Friday and that the United States international will be out for “a couple of weeks”.

Reyna missed both of the U.S. national team’s games during the international break due to a groin injury.

“Gio Reyna will not be there, he has suffered an injury in the national team,” Şahin told a press conference on Wednesday. Schlotti (Nico Schlotterbeck) is suspended. Everything else should be fine. That would mean Serhou (Guirassy) will be involved.”

The winger played just 280 minutes in the league in the first half of the season for Dortmund and a further 235 minutes for Nottingham Forest after joining on loan in January.

“He came back straight away (from the national team) and I found him very sad, unfortunately it will take a few more weeks. And then I hope he can continue on this good path,” said Şahin.

Reyna, the son of former United States captain Claudio, played 10 minutes in Dortmund’s first two Bundesliga games this season.

Mauricio Pochettino was confirmed Tuesday as the new head coach of the U.S. national team. The Argentine signed a two-year contract that will see him lead the team to the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico.
