Police officers who allegedly robbed ‘okada’ rider detained

An Accra court has remanded two off-duty police officers in custody after they attacked an okada rider and stole GH₵3,700.

Corporal Generals Philmon Agbevem and Peter Kwame Badagbor, both stationed at the Accra Central District Police Command, have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery.

The suspects allegedly forced the complainant to withdraw money from his mobile phone and transfer it to another phone registered in the name of a certain Hope Alorvordzi.

The two, represented by their lawyer, Mr Andy Vortia, deny all charges.

They are due to appear in court on September 10, 2024, presided over by Ms Evelyn Asamoah.

The prosecutor, Deputy Police Commissioner Kofi Anane, led by ASP Emmanuel Haligah, told the court that the complainant, Emmanuel Amertodor, is an Okada rider residing in Adenta.

On July 21, 2024, the two off-duty police officers on a motorcycle with registration number GP 8145 arrested the complainant based on information that he and his pillion passenger had stolen a bag containing a mobile phone and other personal belongings from a lady at the National Theatre and were heading towards the Thomas Sankara roundabout.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspects, dressed in uniform and armed with a rifle, followed the motorcyclist and stopped them at the Christ the King traffic light in front of the Jubilee House.

In his attempt to arrest them, the driver managed to escape, but the co-driver, the complainant, was arrested.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the two police officers severely assaulted the prosecutor and handcuffed him.

They forcibly transferred GH₵3,700 from the complainant’s phone to a mobile number with the name Hope Alovordzi and then took GH₵120 from him.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the prosecutor reported the case to the Cantonments police for investigation and then to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters for further investigation.

The suspect was arrested on August 8, 2024. During interrogation, they admitted that they had arrested the complainant on July 21, 2024. However, they denied that they had taken from him the amount stated in the charge sheet.
